Ogallala Veil, 2021, tule, foxtail
20'' x 18''.
The shape of the Ogallala Aquifer in various forms — full outline and broken off pieces suggesting the future shapes of the aquifer — sewn together by the invasive (to Nebraska) foxtail grass. The Ogallala sits beneath nearly all of Nebraska and also underlies parts of seven other states of the Great Plains. Playing with the concept of camouflage and the act of veiling, this piece points to a vicious cycle of Dust Bowl, water over-usage and mis-usage, climate change, dependency on fuels, colonization and invasive/non-native entities.
